João Duarte / duarteacão

[ABOUT]

João Duarte (HE/HIM), also known as duarteacão, is a multidisciplinary artist/designer/...

Never satisfied with the current level of his skills, he is always eager to learn more, be it about the skills he already masters or completely new ones. Usually spending his free time refining them independently, and looking for new ways to enrich his workflow and processes.

Based in Porto, Portugal, João loves exploring all sort of ways to express ideas in visual forms, not afraid to try multiple mixed media techniques, which means he can help you (or your business) with whatever you need to create, from graphic design, to diverse visual and multimedia arts; and even when it comes to designing stages and lightning for your musical performances.

As a cinema and music lover, he's pleased to work in the creation of all your complementary visual objects.

[SELECTED WORK]

PHOTOGRAPHY

"BEHIND THE SCENES"

photobook

BEHIND THE SCENES, is a photobook documenting the creation of videoclips for AMADOR's songs: "VOZ NA CABEÇA" & "TIQUE NERVOSO".

What started as just way of documenting the great memory of talented friends working together, evolved into a physical book, when reviewing the photographs taken.

Realising the potential they had as a standalone piece, with the help of Éditions n’importe quoi. this book came to life.

"ON INTERACTIONS"

photo series

As an exercise for a bigger photo series project, ON INTERACTIONS, explores the way things co-exist in the same space.

It is an amalgamation of photographs not taken with the intention of ever being together, but are so in a way that augments each of them.

"ODE A TI"

alternative photography series

ODE A TI(roughly translating to ODE TO HER) is a collection of various alternative photography processes (cyanotype, anthotypes, chemigrams, ...) done in a span of roughly 6 months.

It served as an introduction to these processes and ignited an interest of combining these techniques with other concepts, such as animation and videoart.

It depicts varied imagery that symbolizes moments in a amorous relationship. As the name sugests, it is an homage to my sweet and loving partner.

"EM SEQUÊNCIA"

photo series

"EM SEQUÊNCIA" explores interactions using still-life as it's main way of doing so.

In a photographic format, which freezes the moment, we observe the pre and post-interaction through visual and social references, using writing as another mean. Out of context, the story of these objects is merely reduced to what is stricly shown and presented, loosing reality's legimity.

This project served as a way to learn different methods to portray interactions, a topic João has always been very intrigued by.

VIDEO WORK

"CALDAS FILM FEST"

recap video /editing & recording/

CALDAS FILM FEST is a yearly film festival located in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.

This video serves as a recap to it's first edition's first day. Where, like the rest of the days, there were different activities happening throughout the city, from a skate-jam, to concerts, and of course, the main event, the screening and post-viewing talk with the directors of the movies.

Combining different music genres and varied ambients in video-format, the editing and camera-work make way to transition each section of the video.

"OLHAR POR DENTRO"

short-film /cinematography & colorgrading/

"OLHAR POR DENTRO" is a student short-film conceptualized in under two weeks, and shot in only ~14 hours.

It follows the story of a private dectetive struggling to connect the dots on a case that haunts the whole town. We see various phases of his grief process of not being able to solve it.

Shot digitally, it takes the Noir aesthetic and approaches it in a more contemporary manner. With the use of natural and artifficial light a high contrast black-and-white look was created.

João did it's cinematography, camera operation and colorgrading.

"REITERAÇÃO"

visual essay /cinematography & colorgrading/

"REITERAÇÃO", translating to "REITERATION", is a visual essay, exploring repeating activities.

It's objective is to open the conversation and debate on what actions are more or less socially acceptable to repeat endlessly on loop. It depicts twelve different actions, some more mundane, other more absurd. It transposes into a socialpolitic, metaphysical, existencial and artistic matter.

Other than conceptualizing the project, João worked on the cinematography and colorgrading. Even acting some of the actions of the grid.

"AMADOR TEASER"

teaser /cinematography & colorgrading/

To promote Amador's songs "VOZ NA CABEÇA" & "TIQUE NERVOSO", a teaser video was shot.

Directed by Guilherme Rocha and with VJ work by Vasco Cavalheiro.

João worked on camera operation, cinematography and colorgrading.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

"BEWARE OF THE MONKEY"

concept redesign of MIKE's album

As part of a college project, where it was required to reimagine and reconceptualize a existing musical album, this concept redesign was created.

After studying the artist's visual identity and previous work, a ASCII artwork-based proposal was conceptualized. Mixing in other elements with more illustrasted characteristics. While the cover is a ASCII representation of an artist's photograph, due to it being a very personal and intimate album, the back cover is a play on words, showing a warning sign and a monkey illustration, both also done in ASCII. Other graphic objects derived from those.

"MAN ALIVE!"

concept 2-year anniversary limited edition of King Krule's album

Done as a way to honor a personal favorite album, "MAN ALIVE!" is a concept 2-year anniversary limited vinyl release, in a sleeve box format, it includes a brand new album cover, based on the original one, and a lyricbook with photographic and illustrasted representations of each song.

Every illustration, done with mixed media processes, drawing on paper and using digital post-processing, it portrayed the very intimate sound of the album.

Based on previous visual looks of the artist's work, done by Jack Marshall, in order to fit the whole discography.
